5 Ways to Spend Less Time at Work

July 3rd, 2009

Technology is supposed to increase our productivity and reduce our work hours, yet many of us find the opposite to be true. We feel busier than ever, we stay at the office later than ever, and sometimes we leave without finishing a single task of substance! Do these five things right now and go to your family on time tonight.

1. Clear off your desk. When your office is cluttered, you’ll have the tendency to flutter around it aimlessly, without a clear sense of where you should channel your energy. I suggest thinking of every new item arriving on your desk as an insect that is infiltrating your territory. Your job is to dispose of it as quickly as possible, either by chucking it in the nearest recycling bin or putting it in its proper place. The only material on your desk should pertain to the task you’re working on at that very minute.

2. Get Your Google on. Manage your virtual world more time-efficiently by signing up for Google’s suite of offerings. The products, which include Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Sites, streamline tasks and facilitate collaboration among people working together on projects. Many are free, and the data are safely backed up and available everywhere you have an Internet connection.

3. Don’t buy that plane ticket. Do you really need to meet with that sales rep on the other side of the world? Video calling services like Skype, which is free and available in 28 languages, allow you to connect visually with anyone in the world via a webcam and a microphone. And what about that training seminar that will keep you out of the office for a week? Webinar technology like Cisco WebEx allows for one-way communication from an individual speaker to an audience, and it can include polling and electronic Q&A.

4. Order strategy – instead of donuts – for the team meeting. Do not call team meetings indiscriminately, and don’t put them on the calendar every week so that people take them for granted. Chit chat can be reserved for happy hour. We all know that real project work gets done outside the conference room and that we do not accomplish things simply by talking about them. Please don’t usurp an hour of valuable work time unless the meeting generates important strategy, delegates tasks to ensure team member accountability, or flags problems so that they can be managed before they get out of hand.

5. Nip procrastination in the bud. Raise your hand if you’ve spent weeks putting off a task that should only take a few hours because you know you don’t want to do it and fear you will spend too much time surfing the web and answering your e-mail? Fight the urge to put things off by breaking complex and overwhelming projects down into smaller chunks with easy starting points. After each mini-task has been completed, reward yourself with a special treat.

Blackberry or Nokia?

June 29th, 2009

I have never been interested in cellphones – the one I use has been with me since 2003 (yes, old!) and I don’t have plans to replace it. However, due to my addiction to the internet and reading e-books, the yearning to get a nice cellphone that would allow me to surf.twit.facebook and read books while out (well, Im never out even) surfaced.

What do you think? Which one is better?
Blackberry Storm 9530

It seems the Nokia E71 is better in terms of price. I’ve yet to seem them both in person because I want to make sure they have wide screens – we will see.

Crash

June 26th, 2009

What is the worst thing that can happen for someone like me who works online from home?

Aside from losing internet. Of course.

Yes, having your computer crash!

I need to get the services of a Rochester personal injury lawyer for this I think, because I really am hurting about this. Heh ~ too much drama.

My first investment from blogging money, my trusty Dell Inspiron 1525, suffered some injuries because of working too hard. I hope she heals soon, in  2-3 weeks time.

But right now, Im praying my Dad is open for a loan so I can get her a new brother – a big, fast desktop computer.

Wish me luck.

Just had to share.

Got this message off a friend’s wall in Facebook:

…got a message that on this day, God wants her to know…

… that happiness has nothing to do with pleasure.
You feel pleasure when you want something and you get it. Or when you don’t want something and you remove it. Pleasure is always relative. Happiness is absolute. Happiness is the understanding and acceptance of life as it is in this very moment as completely perfect, because every creation of God is perfect. The degree to which you do not accept life in all of the Divine forms is the degree to which you suffer.

AMEN.

Work Stress.

June 23rd, 2009

I think I have been pushing myself too hard the past weeks that last weekend I was really feeling bad = unwell. What is scary is that I don’t even know where to pinpoint the cause of my sickness. I usually know what is going on with me so I decided to take a nice break yesterday by sleeping most of the time.

Now it is Tuesday where I am at and I need to work. I started the week right by updating my work expenses sheet and I was pleasantly surprised that I am being steady at three months – I just need to lay off shopping so I can save.

I need to make some samples wedding invitations and spreads for a wedding album as well so I guess I need to start working now.

There’s still Good Men.

Those of you who cannot afford to pay for your meal: eat your fill here."

Sadahiro Inoue

It has been 27 years since Sadahiro Inoue put up the sign on his storefront.

During peak lunch and dinner hours, he treats students who have promised to wash dishes for 30 minutes after eating to a meal at his restaurant complete with a large helping of rice.

About a decade has passed since Inoue started working at the Demachi outlet of the Gyoza no Osho pot-sticker dumpling chain, close to Kyoto University and Doshisha University in Kyoto’s Kamigyo Ward, and the eatery’s 59-year-old store manager has become an institution among students.

Inoue moved to Osaka when he eloped at the age of 20. When he and his wife were struggling to put food on the table, an elderly couple invited them to share meals with them. Inoue was touched. Today, he can’t help but see a little bit of himself in the hungry students that come to his restaurant. The storefront sign represents his heartfelt desire to be of help to struggling young people.

At times, when students are busy studying for certification exams, for example, and have no time to take on part-time jobs, five or more students can be found washing dishes at the restaurant in one day. Inoue is delighted when a former frequent dishwasher comes back to report that he has passed an exam, thanks to Inoue. Among his former dishwashers, there are even three lawyers. "I hope that former students will go on to do good deeds for others when they remember their dishwashing days," he says.

Inoue keeps all the business cards that former dishwashers have given him, and the wall by the cash register is covered with letters sent to him from those who have left Kyoto. "Your restaurant was our home away from home," one says. Another promises, "One day, I will save enough money for you to take a day off." Every time he re-reads these words of gratitude, Inoue says, he is inspired to continue working for as long as he is physically able.

Looking for Health Care.

June 18th, 2009

We still don’t have health insurance coverage and with the rainy season arriving, it only means one thing – flu and cold season too. It isn’t an advantage having kids with asthma, trust me. I’m still over the fence with the current HMO plan that is being offered to us. I heard Blue Advantage has better health insurance benefits and policies. We will see.

Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching

June 17th, 2009

After a drought of groney (green + money) last month, this month proves to be promising. Finally was paid for my album services and had two book projects scheduled for next month in addition to the year long contract I have with another client. I’m trying to have as much as three or four clients a month doing albums so I can match whatever I earn through writing. I also am going to try a writing project that pays low – but will be steady enough to pay for our groceries a month. Yeah baby it’s crunch time. Trying to make sure I know and exercise time management skills too.

The Wholesale and Retail Business

June 16th, 2009

You know, there is one industry that will never suffer inspite of the economic crisis – and that is the retail industry. Shopping is one of the worst sickness yet the best therapy for people, especially for women.

Do you know why auction sites like eBay.com and online general stores like Amazon.com are such huge hits and never suffer that much of big losses? It’s because retail therapy, or shopping in simple terms, remains to be the best stress buster for people.

I have a friend who has made millions by being in the clothing business. She was a wholesaler firstmost. Being a Drop ship (or a wholesaler) means you get to have access to  Wholesale news and even have big control on pricing. Plus even if the commission on one sale is small, with the customers buying in bulk, it sure does compensate evenly.

Wholesale sources need to be legit and of good reputation though. You need to know you are receiving high quality goods for such a price. For example, if you are bidding online for a drop shipper’s items, you need to make sure the drop shipping will be delivering on time and will deliver what was in the contract. It is always best to bid on good sites like eBay.com for this since they have a report and feedback button for bad sellers.

I learned a lot on the web site WholesaleNewsletter.com. They have a lot of informative articles and tips on how to be a wise retailer and a good wholesaler. They even have tips which industries in the shopping arena are strong – ladies’ handbags and ladies’ jewelry.

Like I know how true is this! I have friends who have invested thousands on designer bags. And of course, women’s love affair with jewelry has been around since Cleopatra.
